26 killed in Pahalgam terror attack including 2 foriegners; Terrorists asked their religion before shooting

In one of the deadliest terror strikes in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama attack, armed terrorists opened fire at tourists in Baisaran near Pahalgam on Tuesday afternoon, killing at least 26 people. The victims included two foreign nationals and two locals, while over 20 others were injured, several critically.

The attack occurred in Baisaran, a scenic grassland nestled about six kilometers above the resort town of Pahalgam, often called ‘mini Switzerland’ for its breathtaking views. Eyewitnesses described chilling scenes of chaos and horror as terrorists stormed the peaceful meadow, firing indiscriminately at families picnicking, tourists on pony rides, and visitors dining at small eateries.

Sources revealed that the attackers asked victims about their religion before opening fire. One of the deceased was reportedly found with his clothes partly removed, raising suspicions that the terrorists had forcibly checked his identity before killing him. Videos circulating on social media show injured victims crying for help, bloodied and shocked.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow and labeled the attack as “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.” The administration has declared a state of emergency in the region, and security forces have launched a massive manhunt to track down the perpetrators.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow affiliate of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has claimed responsibility for the massacre. Officials believe the group may have infiltrated from Kishtwar in Jammu and traveled through Kokernag to reach Baisaran in South Kashmir.

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed concern over the safety of tourists in the Valley. This attack marks a disturbing shift in terror tactics, as tourists, who were previously largely untouched, have now become direct targets. Security forces are continuing combing operations in the region, and additional forces have been deployed to prevent further escalation.
